When little Isaiah Ronmen Martinez went out driving with his dad one hot summer night, the eight-year-old couldn’t have imagined the tragedy that was about to befall him. His father, Carlos, lost control of the minivan he was driving and it flipped. Both he and his son were ejected from the vehicle. Dad did not survive. Isaiah, on the other hand, was badly injured and trapped under the twisted metal of the wreck.

Then off-duty NYC detective Kevin Stewart showed up. He had no connection to the crash, but he knew he had to help. Discovering where Isaiah was, he made sure the boy was rescued and immediately transported to the hospital. In an interview with a local TV station, Stewart explained what happened when he first came upon the child:

“He looked at me and said, ‘I don’t want to die.’ I just said, ‘No, you’re not going to die, not today. We are here, we’re going to help,’”
