Underwood stepped onto the stage at the Bridgestone Center in Nashville looking stunning as ever and began the hymn “Softly and Tenderly” as images of artists, musicians, and musical figures that the world lost in the past year flashed on the screen behind the megastar.
During her performance, clips played of a few of those artists from past CMA Awards ceremonies like Don Williams, Glen Campbell, and Troy Gentry.

As moving as the memorial to the artists was, it was towards the end of her performance that had the audience both in Nashville and at home in tears.
Underwood struggled to sing as images of the Route 91 shooting victims appeared on the screen and it will forever be one of the most touching performances at an awards show in history.

The Route 91 Harvest Festival is a country music fest that began in 2014 in the Las Vegas Village on Las Vegas Blvd., formerly called Route 91.
At this year’s festival, 58 people perished and hundreds of others wounded with a gunman open fired on the 22,000 in attendance while Jason Aldean was on stage.
