There have probably been a few times in your life when you clean your couch cushions and find a couple bucks in change or a $20 bill in an old jacket pocket.
You probably feel pretty lucky when that happens, right?
Imagine how lucky you’d feel if you found an old lottery ticket worth over $24 million dollars.
That’s exactly how a 68-year-old grandpa from New York feels after finding the winning slip of paper nearly a year after his numbers were called.
Many states have a time limit on how long a prize can be claimed. In New York, that timeframe is exactly one year from the date of the drawing.
As the claiming period was coming to an end on a May 25, 2016, draw date, lottery officials scrambled to find the winner of the $24.1 million ticket.
“We urge New York Lottery players: Check your pockets. Check your glove box,” Gweneth Dean, director of the New York Gaming Commission’s Division of the Lottery, said in an announcement.
“Look under the couch cushions,” the notice read. “If you have this winning ticket, we look forward to meeting you.”
